UCLA Chancellor Gene Block to Step Down

After 15 Years of Leadership

UCLA Ranked Among World's Top 50 Universities

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) announced today that Chancellor Gene Block will step down from his position in 2023. Block has served as UCLA's chancellor since 2007, overseeing a period of significant growth and academic achievement for the university.

During Block's tenure, UCLA has established itself as a leading research university with global impact across arts and culture, education, healthcare, and technology. The university has also consistently ranked among the top 50 universities in the world, according to both the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Center for World University Rankings.

"Serving as UCLA's chancellor since 2007 has been the greatest honor of my life," Block said. "And so it is with bittersweet feelings that I would like to share my decision to step down from this role."

Block's decision to step down comes as UCLA tops all public universities in the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. The university has also made significant progress in its efforts to increase diversity and inclusion, and to address the challenges of climate change and social inequality.

"UCLA is a world-renowned university with a bright future," Block said. "I am confident that the university will continue to thrive under the leadership of my successor."
